Scaffolding Inspection Requirements & Checklist
June 18, 2026

Scaffolding is involved in a large share of fall-from-height incidents, which is why inspection rules around it are strict. Knowing when and how to inspect keeps workers safe and keeps you compliant.
When scaffolding must be inspected
- Before first use, after it's erected or altered
- At regular intervals not exceeding 7 days
- After any event that could affect its stability — high winds, impact, or heavy rain
What to check
- Foundations — firm, level base plates and sole boards
- Standards and ledgers — upright, properly spaced, securely coupled
- Bracing and ties — adequate and secure to the structure
- Platforms — fully boarded, no gaps, no trap boards
- Guardrails and toe boards — correct height, no missing sections
- Access — secure ladders or stair towers, properly positioned
- Tags — a clear scafftag showing inspection status
Who can inspect
Inspections must be carried out by a competent person with the knowledge and experience to spot defects — typically someone trained to the relevant scaffold inspection standard.
Keep the record straight
Every scaffold inspection needs a written record kept on site. A digital inspection makes this far easier — photo each level, flag defects, and produce a dated, signed report instantly. SiteAudit keeps your 7-day scaffold inspections organised and always to hand.
